Gerðr is the daughter of the giants Gymir and Aurboða. In the Skírnismál, Skírnir approaches Gymir's hall to woo Gerðr on Freyr's behalf.
Freyr married the jötunn maiden Gerðr after sending his servant Skírnir to woo her in the Skírnismál. Their son Fjölnir became the legendary ancestor of the Yngling dynasty.
Skírnir rode to Gerðr's hall bearing Freyr's sword and golden apples, then threats of runic curses, until the jötunn maiden agreed to meet Freyr at the grove of Barri in nine nights.
