The Élivágar poured their venomous waters into Ginnungagap, where they froze into layers of poisoned rime that filled the primordial void from the north, meeting the sparks and heat streaming from Muspelheim in the south.
Muspelheim lies to the south of Ginnungagap. Its heat and sparks warmed the void's southern portion and melted the frozen rime, triggering the emergence of Ymir and Auðumbla.
Niflheim, the world of mist and cold, borders Ginnungagap to the north. Its frozen rime and the icy rivers of the Élivágar crept into the void, filling its northern reaches long before the first life stirred.
Ymir, the first being, quickened from melting rime within Ginnungagap when the searing heat of Muspelheim met the frozen venom of the Élivágar, and from his sleeping body's sweat sprang the first frost giants.
