Description
Silent through all the ages of the world, Gjallarhorn waits at Heimdall's side on the rainbow bridge. When the bonds of Fenrir snap and the sea rises, its blast will shake Yggdrasil to its roots and summon every god to the last battle.
Mythology & Lore
The Silent Watch
For all the ages since Asgard was built, Gjallarhorn has not sounded. Heimdall stands at his post on the rainbow bridge Bifröst, watching with eyes that see for hundreds of miles, listening with ears that hear grass growing on the hillside. The horn at his side is reserved for one moment.
A passage in Völuspá 27 speaks of a horn hidden beneath Yggdrasil, near the well of Mímir where Odin left his eye. Whether this is Gjallarhorn or a drinking horn Mímir uses at the well, the sources do not say.
The Blast
When Fenrir breaks free and Jörmungandr rises from the sea, Heimdall will raise the horn to his lips. The Völuspá places the sounding in the same breath as the shaking of Yggdrasil: the ash trembles, Heimdall lifts the horn, and the Einherjar take up their weapons for the last time. Its blast will be heard in all Nine Worlds at once. Every god, every giant, every dead warrior in Valhalla will know what it means.
