About Gleipnir

Associated with
  • Gleipnir is the magical silken fetter forged by the dwarves from six impossible ingredients to bind Fenrir. Despite its delicate appearance, it holds the great wolf on the island Lyngvi until Ragnarök.

  • At Ragnarök, the magical bond Gleipnir breaks, freeing the wolf Fenrir who has been bound since the gods tricked him, costing Týr his hand.

  • The Aesir sent Skírnir to the dwarves in Svartálfheim to commission Gleipnir, the silken fetter woven from impossible things — the sound of a cat's footfall, a woman's beard, the roots of a mountain — that would bind Fenrir where iron chains had failed.

  • Týr placed his hand in Fenrir's mouth as a pledge of good faith while the gods bound the wolf with Gleipnir. When Fenrir found the magical fetter unbreakable, he bit off Týr's hand in retribution.
