Mythology & Lore
The Mead-Goat
Heiðrún stands on the roof of Valhalla, browsing on the branches of a tree called Læraðr. From her udder flows clear mead, enough each day to fill a great vat. Every night the Einherjar drink from it. Every morning it is full again. Grímnismál 25 places her there alongside the stag Eikþyrnir, who grazes on the same tree; from his antlers drip the waters that feed every river in the world.
Snorri repeats the scene in the Gylfaginning. The boar Sæhrímnir provides the food, cooked and eaten and whole again by dawn. Heiðrún provides the drink. Between them, the dead want for nothing.
