Description

Iron gauntlets that let Thor grip Mjölnir’s short handle — forged too small when Loki’s meddling made the dwarf Brokkr flinch at the bellows. Without them, not even the thunder god can wield his own hammer at full force.

Mythology & Lore

The Shortened Handle

The gauntlets exist because of a flaw in Mjölnir. When the dwarven smiths Brokkr and Sindri forged the hammer, Loki disguised himself as a fly and bit Brokkr's eyelid while he worked the bellows. The flinch was brief. It was enough. The handle came out too short for a proper two-handed grip.

Snorri lists Járngreipr in the Gylfaginning among Thor's three possessions, alongside Mjölnir and his belt of strength Megingjörð. Without the iron gloves, Thor cannot grip the short handle at full force. No origin story is given. Snorri names them, states their purpose, and moves on. They are functional, not storied: the correction for a dwarf's flinch.
