Mythology & Lore
Hoddmímir's Wood
In the Vafþrúðnismál, Odin asks the wise giant what two humans will survive the ruin of the world. Vafþrúðnir answers: Lífþrasir and Líf. They will hide in Hoddmímir's holt, a wood sheltered within the world tree itself. The Fimbulvetr will come first, three winters without a summer between them, and then the fire. Surtr will burn everything. The earth will sink beneath the sea.
Lífþrasir and Líf will survive on morning dew. Nothing else. When the new earth rises green from the water, fields bearing crops no one planted, the two of them will walk out of the wood. The Gylfaginning names them the ancestors of all humanity to come. Their names say what they are: Líf is "life," Lífþrasir "the one who clings to it."
