forbidden love

Description

Where other gods forbid, Lofn permits. Snorri counts her among the Ásynjur and says she has leave from Odin and Frigg to bring together those whose unions have been banned, no matter who stands against the match.

Mythology & Lore

The Goddess Who Permits

Snorri names Lofn in his catalogue of the Ásynjur in Gylfaginning. He says she is so gentle and good to invoke that she has permission from All-Father and Frigg to arrange unions between people, even when others have forbidden or banned them. Her name comes from the Old Norse lof, "permission" or "praise." That is all Snorri says. No stories survive of the matches she blessed or the prohibitions she overruled. She exists in the sources as a single function: the power to say yes when everyone else has said no.
