Mythology & Lore

The Moon-Hound

In Gylfaginning 12, Snorri describes an old giantess who dwells in the Ironwood (Járnviðr) and nurtures Fenrir's brood as wolves. Among them, one is called Mánagarmr, "moon-hound." He will gorge on the flesh of dying men, swallow the moon, and splash the heavens with blood. When the moon goes dark, Ragnarök begins.

The Gylfaginning also names a wolf called Hati Hróðvitnisson who chases the moon across the sky each night. Whether Mánagarmr and Hati are two names for the same wolf or two separate creatures from the Ironwood brood, the sources do not settle. Both are Fenrir's kin. Both are bound to the moon's destruction.
