Freyja transformed Óttar into the boar Hildisvíni through seiðr, disguising him so she could ride to the giantess Hyndla and demand his genealogy without revealing his mortal identity.
Óttar is a mortal devotee of Freya who built a hörg (stone altar) and made frequent sacrifices to her. In return, Freya protects him and helps establish his noble lineage in the Hyndluljóð.
In the Hyndluljóð, Hyndla recites the ancestry of Óttar at Freya's demand. Hyndla recognizes that Óttar is disguised as the boar Hildisvíni and curses him.
