The auger Rati gnawed through the mountain Hnitbjörg, carving the narrow passage through which Odin slithered in serpent form to reach the Mead of Poetry hidden within.
Odin produced the auger Rati and directed Baugi to use it to bore through Hnitbjörg. In Hávamál stanza 104, Odin claims: 'Rati's mouth I caused to make room.'
