Mythology & Lore
The Feast of Valhalla
In Grímnismál 18, Odin names the workings of his hall: "Andhrímnir has in Eldhrímnir / Sæhrímnir boiled, / the best of meats; / but few know / what the Einherjar eat." The cook Andhrímnir slaughters the boar each evening and boils it in the great cauldron Eldhrímnir. The Einherjar eat their fill. By morning the boar stands whole again.
Snorri repeats this in the Gylfaginning, where the enthroned figure Hárr explains Valhalla's provisions to the visiting king Gangleri. The warriors fight and kill each other on the practice fields each day, rise each evening, and sit down to Sæhrímnir's meat. The boar dies and returns on the same schedule they do.
