Sigmund and his twin sister Signý produced Sinfjötli through an incestuous union. Signý used shape-shifting magic to conceive a pure Völsung avenger strong enough to help Sigmund destroy King Siggeir.
Sinfjötli was conceived and raised for the sole purpose of destroying Siggeir. After years of training in the wilderness, Sinfjötli and Sigmund infiltrated and burned Siggeir's hall in vengeance for the Völsung massacre.

Borghild poisoned Sinfjötli at a funeral feast to avenge her brother whom he had killed. Sigmund drank the first two cups for him, but the third time Sinfjötli drank and died, according to the Völsunga saga.
After Sinfjötli's death, Sigmund carried his body to a fjord where a ferryman — Odin in disguise — took the body across in a small boat and vanished, as told in the Völsunga saga.
Sigmund and Sinfjötli donned enchanted wolf-skins and roamed as werewolves in the wilderness. Sigmund bit Sinfjötli in wolf-rage but healed him with a leaf brought by Odin's raven, and they later burned the skins to break the curse.
