Skírnir serves as Freyr's messenger and loyal servant, most notably undertaking the journey to Jötunheimr to woo Gerðr on Freyr's behalf in the Skírnismál.
Skírnir rode to Gerðr's hall bearing Freyr's sword and golden apples, then threats of runic curses, until the jötunn maiden agreed to meet Freyr at the grove of Barri in nine nights.
The Aesir sent Skírnir to the dwarves in Svartálfheim to commission Gleipnir, the silken fetter woven from impossible things — the sound of a cat's footfall, a woman's beard, the roots of a mountain — that would bind Fenrir where iron chains had failed.
