Description
After Loki sheared Sif's golden hair, these unnamed dwarf smiths forged a replacement that grew like the real thing. Then they added Odin's spear Gungnir and Freyr's foldable ship Skíðblaðnir: three flawless works whose quality provoked the wager that armed Thor with Mjölnir.
Mythology & Lore
The Treasure-Forging
In Skáldskaparmál, Loki cut off Sif's golden hair, and Thor seized him by the throat. Loki would fix it or lose every bone in his body. He traveled to Svartálfheim and found the Sons of Ívaldi, dwarf craftsmen never named individually, known only by their father. They forged golden hair that would grow upon Sif's head like the real thing.
While at their forge, the dwarves also made the spear Gungnir for Odin, which never missed its mark, and the ship Skíðblaðnir for Freyr, large enough to hold all the gods in war gear yet small enough to fold into a pouch. All three works were flawless.
The Wager
Loki, flushed with his success, wagered his own head with the dwarf Brokkr that Brokkr's brother Sindri could not forge three objects of equal worth. Sindri and Brokkr went to work. The bellows blew, the forge blazed, and what came out was Mjölnir, the hammer that would arm Thor until Ragnarök. The gods judged it the greatest treasure of all. Brokkr came to collect Loki's head. Loki argued that his neck was not part of the bargain. Brokkr settled for sewing Loki's lips shut with a leather thong.
