Mythology & Lore
The Lord of Fire
Surtr stands at the boundary of Múspelheim, flaming sword in hand, waiting for the end of the world. He is the fire giant whose patience spans the ages, present before the gods existed, destined to outlast them. His name means "The Black One" or "The Swarthy One," perhaps evoking the charred remains left by flames or the darkness of smoke. Múspelheim itself is the realm of fire at the southern edge of the cosmos, bright and blazing, unbearable to those who are not native to it. Snorri describes it as a luminous, burning land opposite Niflheim, the realm of ice at the northern end. Surtr has guarded its frontier since before memory.
Before the Gods
The creation story opens with Surtr already there. When the worlds were young, when Ymir's flesh was raised to form the earth and his skull became the sky, Surtr already stood guard over the realm of fire. He has no origin, no genealogy, no story except waiting.
The fire he guards played a role in creation itself. Sparks and heat flowing from Múspelheim met the rime and ice of Niflheim in the primordial void of Ginnungagap, and from this meeting, the first life stirred. The ice melted into the shape of Ymir, the progenitor of giants. Odin and his brothers caught the embers of Múspelheim and placed them in the sky as sun, moon, and stars. The fire served creation twice: first stirring life in the void, then lighting the cosmos.
The Sons of Múspel
Surtr does not ride alone. The Völuspá and Gylfaginning both speak of "Múspells synir," the sons of Múspel, a host that rides forth from the south at Ragnarök. These fire giants are barely individuated in the sources, defined by their element rather than by personality or deed. Their ride shatters Bifröst, the rainbow bridge whose guardian Heimdall has watched since the beginning of time.
Snorri describes this host as brilliant and burning, filling the entire plain of Vígríðr. A wildfire given will and direction by the figure at its head.
Surtr at Ragnarök
When the signs of the end appear, Surtr will rise. The Völuspá's seeress sees him "faring from the south with the harm of branches" (a kenning for fire); "the sun of the slaughter-gods shines from his sword."
On the plain of Vígríðr, he will face Freyr, the Vanir god of fertility. Freyr had given away his magic sword to win the giantess Gerðr's love and will fight Surtr with an antler or some lesser weapon. He will fall.
The World-Burning
After the battles have run their course, Surtr will complete his work. He flings fire over the earth; flame leaps high and licks heaven. Snorri's account in Gylfaginning is stark: "Surtr flings fire over the earth and burns the whole world."
The earth rises again from the sea. Eagles hunt fish over new waterfalls. Crops grow unsown. Baldr and Höðr return from Hel. In the Vafþrúðnismál, when Odin asks what will become of the earth, the answer loops back to fire. Whether Surtr himself survives, the sources do not say.
