Gróa married Aurvandil the Bold, and their son Svipdag later invoked her spirit from the grave for protective charms. Thor brought news of Aurvandil's safe return while Gróa was healing him, breaking her concentration on the spell.
Svipdag journeyed to Menglöð's flame-ringed fortress, passed its defenses, and spoke his true name at the gates — at which Menglöð descended from her throne and welcomed him as her long-awaited destined beloved.
In the Grógaldr, Svipdag raises his dead mother Gróa from her burial mound through necromancy. Gróa's shade sings nine protective galdr spells over him before he departs on his quest for Menglöð.
Svipdag's quest culminates at Lyfjaberg, the healing mountain where Menglöð sits enthroned among her handmaidens, waiting for the hero whose name alone will open the gates.
