Description

She stands at the door and bars the way. Syn guards Frigg's hall against the unworthy, and her name became the Norse word for denial: when someone refused a claim at law, they were said to set up a syn.

Mythology & Lore

The Closed Door

Snorri lists Syn among the Ásynjur in Gylfaginning and gives her a single, sharp function: she guards the doors of the hall and shuts them against those who should not enter. No story survives of anyone testing her. No one gets past.

Her name carried into the language. When a defendant denied a charge at a legal assembly, the Norsemen said a syn had been set up. The goddess of refusal lent her name to the act of refusal itself.
