Útgarða-Loki disguised Jörmungandr as a great cat and challenged Thor to lift it. Thor could raise only one paw, but the giants were terrified — he had nearly lifted the World Serpent from the ocean.
Útgarða-Loki rules the great fortress Útgarðr deep in Jötunheim, where he humbled Thor, Loki, and Tjálfi through illusory contests — the serpent disguised as a cat, old age disguised as a crone, wildfire disguised as a glutton.
Útgarða-Loki challenged Loki to an eating contest against Logi, who devoured trough and all. When the illusions fell away, Útgarða-Loki revealed that Logi was wildfire itself — nothing eats faster than flame.
In Útgarða-Loki's hall, Þjálfi raced three times against Hugi and lost each time. When the illusions were revealed, Útgarða-Loki explained that Hugi was Thought itself, and no mortal's legs could outrun the speed of the mind.
Útgarða-Loki deceived Thor with illusory contests at his fortress — Thor unknowingly drank the sea, lifted Jörmungandr disguised as a cat, and wrestled Old Age, feats that terrified the giants.
