Mythology & Lore
The Bloody Mace
Aeshma is wrath itself, given a mace and a purpose. He serves Ahriman, lord of the Lie, and his work is to turn humans violent. The Vendidad names him as the daeva who incites men to slaughter cattle in fury rather than with the ritual prayers Zoroastrian law requires. An animal killed in rage belongs to Aeshma. An animal killed with prayer does not. His influence begins where the prayers stop.
In the Zamyad Yasht, Aeshma marshals among the forces the daevas hurl against the xvarənah, the divine glory that settles on righteous rulers. The Bundahishn counts him among the six archdaevas who oppose the Amesha Spentas. Where other daevas work through deception or disease, Aeshma attacks outright. The Haoma Yasht names the sacred haoma drink as his particular counter: a priest who drank haoma and spoke the prayers could hold Aeshma's fury at a distance.
Sraosha's Adversary
Aeshma's eternal opponent is Sraosha, the yazata of obedience. The Vendidad pairs them as exact opposites: Sraosha hears divine law, Aeshma hears nothing but his own fury.
Their contest plays out at the Chinvat Bridge, where every soul crosses after death. Mithra, Sraosha, and Rashnu stand at the approach to judge the dead. If the soul is righteous, the bridge widens and Sraosha walks them across to the House of Song. If the soul is wicked, the bridge narrows to a razor's edge. Aeshma waits below. The Vendidad prescribes prayers for the dying and the newly dead so that Sraosha's protection reaches them in time. Without those prayers, a soul crosses the bridge alone.
The Dēnkard foretells their final meeting at the Frashokereti, the renovation of the world. When Ahura Mazda's forces triumph and evil is unmade, Sraosha will face Aeshma for the last time. Wrath will be broken. The world will be made whole.
