Mythology & Lore

The Adversary of Devotion

Naonhaithya's name echoes the Vedic Nasatyas, divine healers demonized in Zoroaster's reformation. Within the Zoroastrian system, he is the archdaeva assigned to corrupt everything Spenta Armaiti guards: willing service, humble devotion, care of the earth.

The Bundahishn pairs each archdaeva against a corresponding Amesha Spenta. Naonhaithya's target is the spirit of holy obedience itself. A person under his sway grows restless, ungrateful, contemptuous of religious duty. The productive work that Spenta Armaiti inspires withers into neglect.

Yasna 32 denounces those who follow the daevas and choose arrogance over devotion. The Vendidad lists Naonhaithya among the demons to be repelled through ritual and prayer. He is not a figure of dramatic myth but a name for the corruption that enters when service turns bitter and the faithful stop tending what they were given.
