Mythology & Lore

Holy Devotion

Spenta Armaiti (Middle Persian: Spandarmad) is one of the seven Amesha Spentas, the divine emanations of Ahura Mazda. Her name means "Holy Devotion" or "Bounteous Piety," and her sacred domain is the earth itself. The Gathas describe her in Yasna 44 and 45 as present at the foundations of the world, linked to Ahura Mazda's creative work from the beginning.

Her demonic opponent is Naonhaithya, the archdaeva of discontent and arrogance, the spirit that corrupts willing devotion into resentful rebellion.

Guardian of the Earth

The Vendidad prescribes that the earth must not be defiled by corpse matter or other pollutants. Traditional Zoroastrian practice avoids burial in the ground, instead exposing the dead in dakhmas where vultures consume the flesh. The earth is Spenta Armaiti's body, and to defile it is to wound her. Agriculture is particularly associated with her veneration: the Vendidad praises the farmer who cultivates the land, describing it as an act that pushes back the barrenness wrought by Angra Mainyu.

The Birth of Humanity

The Bundahishn recounts that when Gayomard, the first man, was slain by Ahriman, his seed fell to the earth. From the ground nourished by that seed, a rhubarb plant grew, and from it emerged Mashya and Mashyana, the first human couple. Spenta Armaiti's earth received death and brought forth life.

The fifth month of the Zoroastrian calendar bears her name, Spandarmad, and when her day coincides with her month, it creates a sacred observance honoring the earth.
