Mythology & Lore

Sky and Earth

Before there were gods, there was Caelus and Terra. Sky lay upon Earth, and from their union came Saturn and the Titans. But Caelus would not let his children emerge. He pressed them down within Terra's body, and she groaned under their weight.

The Sickle

Terra fashioned a sickle and gave it to Saturn, the youngest of her sons. He waited until Caelus spread himself over Terra at nightfall, then reached up and cut. The sky recoiled. Heaven separated from Earth, and the imprisoned children spilled free.

Saturn took his father's place. But Caelus and Terra warned him: one of his own sons would do to him what he had done to the sky. Saturn swallowed his children one by one, until Jupiter, hidden by his mother, grew strong enough to do exactly that.
