Eirene, the Greek Hora of peace, passed into Roman religion as Pax, who became a central figure of imperial ideology — Augustus consecrated the Ara Pacis in her honor, and Vespasian built the Templum Pacis after his conquest of Judaea.
The doors of Janus's temple on the Forum stood open during wartime and were closed only when Pax reigned over the entire Roman world. Augustus famously closed them three times, linking Janus's ritual directly to the establishment of the Pax Romana.
