Vertumnus courted Pomona through a parade of disguises — reaper, vine-dresser, soldier, fisherman — until he appeared as an old woman, told the cautionary tale of Iphis and Anaxarete, then cast off his disguise and won her love in his true form.
Voltumna passed directly into Roman religion as Vertumnus, the god of seasonal change — Propertius declares him an Etruscan deity transplanted to Rome, and his cult on the Aventine preserved the old Etruscan connection.
