About Voluptas

Family
  • Cupid(parent),Psyche(parent)Marriage

Cupid fell in love with the mortal Psyche after accidentally pricking himself with his own arrow. After Psyche endured Venus's trials, Jupiter granted her immortality and the pair married on Olympus, producing a daughter named Voluptas.

Equivalent to
  • Hedone(Greek)

Voluptas is the Latin name for Hedone, the personification of pleasure — both represent the same divine concept of sensual delight, and Apuleius uses Voluptas as the Roman rendering of the Greek figure.

Hedone as daughter of Eros and Psyche comes from Apuleius (2nd c. CE Latin), not from earlier Greek sources. Greek Hedone is independently attested as a personification of pleasure without this parentage.
