Greatest of the Russian bogatyri (knights) who lay paralyzed for 33 years before being healed by wandering pilgrims. He defended Kiev and Vladimir the Great against countless enemies.
Ilya Muromets was born to peasant parents near the town of Murom, but from birth, he could not move his legs. For thirty-three years, he sat on the stove (the traditional place for invalids and elders in Russian homes), unable to walk, while his parents grew old working the fields. He seemed destined to live and die a cripple.
One day, while Ilya's parents were away, three wandering pilgrims (sometimes described as kaliki or Christ and two apostles in disguise) came to the door asking for water. Ilya explained he could not walk. They told him to rise—and he did. They had him drink three cups of mead: the first healed him, the second gave him the strength of twelve men, and the third was taken back lest he become too powerful.
Ilya became a bogatyr—a knight-errant of Russian legend, defender of the faith and the motherland. His first feat was capturing the legendary horse Sivushko and obtaining his mighty armor and weapons. He then rode to Kiev to serve Prince Vladimir, defeating the monstrous Nightingale Robber on the way—a creature whose whistle could kill.
Ilya became the greatest of Vladimir's bogatyrs, alongside Dobrynya Nikitich and Alyosha Popovich. He defended Kiev against Tatars, monsters, and invaders, his strength unmatched by any foe. He was proud and quick to anger, once quarreling with Vladimir himself, but always returned when the motherland needed him.
Remarkably, Ilya Muromets may have been a real person. In the caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra lies a mummified body identified as "Ilya of Murom," showing signs of spinal disease healed in adulthood and a warrior's death. The Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint. The legend and the man have become one—the paralyzed peasant who became Russia's greatest hero.
