Description
More volatile than the house-dwelling Domovoi, the Dvorovoi guards the farmyard with fierce possessiveness, tangling the manes of horses whose color displeases him and riding them to exhaustion. Bread, salt, and animals of the right hue keep his favor.
Mythology & Lore
The Yard
The Domovoi stays in the house. The Dvorovoi lives outside it, in the barns and stables and sheds of the farmyard, the dvor that gave him his name. He looks like the Domovoi, a small hairy old man, but his temper is worse. Farm workers learned not to enter the outbuildings after dark without announcing themselves. Those who forgot might find themselves shoved, scratched, or worse.
His concern is livestock. A pleased Dvorovoi keeps the horses healthy and the cows giving milk. An offended one tangles horses' manes into knots at night and rides them in circles until they foam and stagger. Animals could sicken and die for no visible reason. The family knew who was responsible.
The Wrong Color
Every Dvorovoi has his own preferences about animal colors. One will tolerate black horses and hate white ones. Another favors brown cows and will sicken any spotted animal brought onto the property. Families learned which colors their Dvorovoi accepted through loss: when a new animal died within days of arriving, its color was wrong.
Bringing a new animal home required a formal introduction. The farmer led it into the yard and asked the Dvorovoi to accept it, to protect it, to count it among his charges. Without the ritual, the spirit treated the animal as an intruder. Some families buried a rooster under the barn threshold at Easter as an offering, or left bread and salt in the yard on feast days. Zelenin and Maksimov both recorded these practices from living informants in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Dvorovoi was not a story people told. He was a presence people managed, season by season, animal by animal.
