Description

Each dawn, Zorya Utrennyaya opens the celestial gates and sends the sun forth on his chariot; each dusk, her sister Zorya Vechernaya receives him and bolts the gates shut. Between these duties, they check the chains binding a monstrous hound to Ursa Minor — for if those chains ever break, the world ends.

Mythology & Lore

The Gates

Dazhbog the sun god dwells in a palace at the eastern edge of the world. Each morning, Zorya Utrennyaya rises before him, opens the celestial gates, and sends him forth on his chariot. She is the first light in the sky, the glow that announces his coming.

At the western edge, Zorya Vechernaya waits. She receives the sun as he returns, stables his horses, and bolts the gates behind him. Her light is the last glow after sunset, lingering until darkness takes over.

Some traditions add a third sister. Zorya Polunochna watches over the sun during its passage through the underworld, guarding the deepest point of the night when no light remains.

The Chain on Ursa Minor

The Zorya bear a second duty. A monstrous hound is chained to Ursa Minor, the constellation anchored by the Pole Star. If the chains break and the beast escapes, it will devour the constellation, and the world will end.

Each day the Zorya check the chains, inspecting them for wear. The creature strains. The chains hold. The world persists for one more cycle.

The Starry Veil

In the zagovory, the East Slavic folk incantations recorded by Afanasyev, Maykov, and Sakharov in the nineteenth century, warriors and travelers invoked the Zorya before battle or journey. The prayer was direct: cover me with your starry veil, shield me from swords and arrows. Lock the paths to harm as you lock the celestial gates.

The Zorya in these prayers are not gentle dawn goddesses but warrior maidens, fierce and radiant, riding the heavens with weapons gleaming like starlight and veils streaming behind them. The veil they lower over the petitioner is woven from starlight. Impenetrable.
