Mythology & Lore
The Oracle Lake
At over five thousand meters in the mountains southeast of Lhasa, Lhamo Latso lies in a steep-walled cirque in Gyaca County, its waters fed by glacial melt and snowfall. The lake is considered the life-spirit lake (bla mtsho) of the protector goddess Palden Lhamo, who according to Tibetan tradition promised the Dalai Lama lineage that she would guard their spiritual succession. Visions appear to those who make the arduous pilgrimage to the lake's shore and gaze upon its surface. The images seen in the water are understood not as natural reflections but as direct communications from Palden Lhamo, revealing fragments of the future to those with the merit to perceive them. The lake's prophetic reputation is attested as far back as the institution of the Dalai Lama succession, and it remains one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the Tibetan Buddhist world.
Visions and the Dalai Lama Succession
The most consequential function of Lhamo Latso has been its role in identifying the reincarnations of the Dalai Lamas. Following the death of a Dalai Lama, senior monks and the regent would undertake the pilgrimage to the lake to seek visions indicating where the new incarnation had been born. The search for the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, provides a well-documented example. In 1935, the regent Reting Rinpoche traveled to Lhamo Latso and reported seeing in the waters the Tibetan letters Ah, Ka, and Ma, along with a vision of a monastery with a jade-green and gold roof beside a small house with turquoise tiles. This vision was interpreted as pointing toward Amdo province, and the search party eventually located the young Lhamo Thondup in the village of Taktser, near Kumbum Monastery, whose features matched the lake's revelation. Similar accounts surround the identification of earlier incarnations, establishing Lhamo Latso as an indispensable element of the succession tradition. Beyond the Dalai Lama search, the lake has also been consulted for guidance on matters of state and religious importance, and ordinary pilgrims report receiving personal visions concerning their own futures.
