Description

Small, invisible, and fond of mischief, the theurang haunt Tibetan forges and mountain paths. A traveler lost on a familiar road, a hammer vanished from the anvil, a child talking to no one: these are signs the little ones are near.

Mythology & Lore

The Little Ones

Theurang are small spirits, childlike in size and temperament. Most of the time they are invisible. When they choose to appear, they take the shape of small humans or shift into animals and objects to deceive whoever is watching. They are neither demons nor protectors, and they answer to no one.

Their home is the forge. Tibetan blacksmiths worked in the company of theurang, whether they wanted to or not. A smith who left offerings and spoke respectfully of the spirits might find the work going well, the metal cooperative. One who offended them suffered: cracked castings, tools gone missing, accidents at the bellows.

The Tricks

A traveler walking a path he has walked a hundred times finds himself lost. The landmarks are gone or rearranged. He walks in circles until he recites a mantra or simply recognizes what is happening, and the illusion breaks. A tool disappears from where it was set down and reappears somewhere impossible. Strange voices call from places where no one stands.

These pranks are usually harmless. But theurang hold grudges. Disrespect them or trespass on their ground, and the tricks sharpen. What began as a misplaced hammer becomes a string of forge accidents. What began as a wrong turn becomes a night spent lost in the cold.

Children and Offerings

Theurang have a particular affinity with children. When a child misbehaves without explanation, talks to invisible companions, or wanders off on strange errands, parents may suspect theurang influence. The spirits' childlike nature draws them to human children, and this closeness makes them both playmates and threats.

Families leave food and incense to keep the peace, placed near the forge or at the edges of theurang territory. Mantras and blessed objects offer further protection. Theurang cannot be driven out. They can only be lived with.
