Tsongkhapa is regarded as a human emanation of Manjushri. Throughout his life he received direct visions and teachings from the bodhisattva of wisdom, culminating in a famous vision where Manjushri appeared surrounded by a vast assembly of Indian masters and transmitted the definitive view of emptiness.
Tsongkhapa explicitly built on Atisha's legacy. His Lamrim Chenmo is a vast expansion of Atisha's Lamp for the Path, and the Gelug school he founded is the direct descendant of Atisha's Kadampa tradition — so much so that early Gelugpas were called 'New Kadampas'.
Tsongkhapa's Lamrim Chenmo draws on Maitreya's five treatises transmitted through Asanga, structuring the graduated path to enlightenment upon the Abhisamayalamkara and the Uttaratantra as foundational texts of the Gelug tradition.
