About Umay

Family
  • Tengri(spouse)Consort

Tengri, the Eternal Blue Sky, and Umay, goddess of fertility and the earth, form the supreme divine pair in Altai Turkic tradition — heaven and earth, the masculine sky above and the nurturing earth-mother below.

The Tengri-Umay pairing is primarily attested in Altai shamanic traditions and later reconstructions; the Orkhon inscriptions mention both deities but do not explicitly link them as consorts.

Guards
  • Umay carries the kut that animates newborn children, delivering the sacred life-force from heaven to the cradle — when her favor departs, the child's kut fades and sickness follows.

Enemy of
  • Albastı and Umay stand as adversaries at the threshold of every birthing tent — Umay hovering to guard the mother and newborn's kut, while the Albastı creeps in to snatch the life-force away.

Equivalent to
  • Umay(Mongolian)

Umay, the goddess who guards the life-force of children and the fertility of the steppe, is the same deity venerated across both Turkic and Mongolian traditions — her name, function, and association with the birth-tent persist unchanged from the Orkhon inscriptions through Mongolian shamanic practice.
