Mythology & Lore
The Ferryman
Aganju rules the places humans have not conquered: the volcanic mountain and the desert that presses against cultivated land. His power is the earth's own, the force that builds mountains from molten rock. Son of Oduduwa, he links the creator to the elemental forces that shape the land.
When Shango fled his enemies in Oyo and the sea blocked his escape, no other orisha could carry him across. Shango's lightning could not bridge the water. Aganju bore the thunder god over the waves. From that day, Aganju was the ferryman. His leopard skin garment marks the wild nature he carries. He is the earthquake beneath the city, the desert at the farmland's edge.
