About Odu

Family
  • Orunmila(spouse)Marriage

Odu is the primordial wife of Orunmila, embodying the deepest mysteries of Ifá divination. She is kept in a sealed calabash that only initiated babalawos may see, representing the sacred feminine power at the heart of Orunmila's wisdom.

Guarded by
  • Osun, the sacred guardian staff of Orunmila, watches over the inner sanctum where Odu's sealed calabash is kept. Osun alerts babalawos to spiritual disturbances that might threaten Odu's concealment.

Associated with
  • In the central patakí of Odu's concealment, Eshu's trickery caused someone to look upon Odu's forbidden face while Orunmila was away. This violation forced Orunmila to perform extensive rituals to appease Odu and restore the Ifá system.

  • Olodumare entrusted Odu to Orunmila as the vessel containing the fundamental mysteries of existence. Without Odu's power from the supreme deity, the Ifá divination system could not function.

  • Odu is the spiritual mother of the sixteen principal odù from which all 256 signs of Ifá derive. One's Ori is revealed through these odù, making Odu the ultimate source of the knowledge through which personal destiny is understood.

  • In some Lukumí patakí, Oshun's curiosity led her to lift the cloth covering Odu's calabash, violating the taboo of seeing Odu's face. This transgression is cited as one reason women are excluded from the highest Ifá initiation.
