Description

Nezha's primary weapon, a spear whose tip burns with divine fire that no demon can withstand. Bestowed by the immortal Taiyi Zhenren, the Fire-Tipped Spear proved decisive in Nezha's battle with Ao Bing, son of the Eastern Dragon King. That killing set off a crisis between dragonkind and the gods.

Mythology & Lore

Gift of Taiyi Zhenren

The Fire-Tipped Spear was one of several divine weapons bestowed on Nezha by his master Taiyi Zhenren, the immortal who recognized in the child-god the makings of a celestial warrior. The spear's tip burns with flames that never die and cut through demonic defenses impervious to ordinary weapons. In the Fengshen Yanyi, Taiyi Zhenren arms Nezha with a full arsenal: the Universe Ring, the Wind Fire Wheels, and the Red Armillary Sash among them. The spear is the weapon he reaches for when the others have done their work of binding and disrupting.

The Killing of Ao Bing

The spear saw its most consequential use when the young Nezha, playing at the edge of the Eastern Sea, stirred the ocean with his Red Armillary Sash and disturbed the underwater palace of Ao Guang. The Dragon King sent his son Ao Bing to confront the intruder. Nezha and Ao Bing fought, and the Fire-Tipped Spear ended it. Nezha killed the dragon prince and stripped his sinews.

The four Dragon Kings descended on Nezha's family at Chentangguan, threatening to flood the city. When the crisis reached the Jade Emperor's court, Nezha chose to die rather than let his family suffer for his deed. Taiyi Zhenren rebuilt him from lotus roots and restored the weapons that had made him formidable, the Fire-Tipped Spear among them.
