About Wayland

Family
  • Bodvild(spouse),Witege(child)Consort

Bodvild bore Wayland's child after he drugged and assaulted her as part of his revenge against her father Niðuð. In later tradition, the child was the hero Witege, inheritor of his father's smithing legacy.

The Völundarkviða confirms Böðvildr’s pregnancy but does not name the child. The identification as Witige/Vidga comes from the Þiðreks saga and Dietrich cycle tradition.

  • Egill(sibling),Slagfiðr(sibling)

Wayland and Egill were brothers, both sons of a Finnish king and princes of the Álfar. The Völundarkviða tells how the brothers and their third sibling Slagfiðr married three valkyrie swan-maidens by a lake.

  • Hervör Alvitr(spouse)Consort

Wayland and Hervör alvitr, a valkyrie swan-maiden, wed after she and her two sisters set aside their feathered cloaks by a lake. They lived together for seven winters until Hervör donned her swan plumage and flew away, leaving Wayland to forge golden rings in grief.
