The Old Man of the Sea

Nereus was born to Pontus and Gaia before the Olympians rose to power — a sea god older than Poseidon. He was truthful and gentle, a god who never forgot what was right, unlike the violent and capricious powers that ruled the deeper waters. He married the Oceanid Doris, and together they produced the fifty Nereids — Thetis, who would bear Achilles, and Amphitrite, who would wed Poseidon — sea nymphs who embodied the gentler moods of the sea. Among them was Galatea, whom the Cyclops Polyphemus loved in vain.

Nereus possessed unerring prophecy and could change his shape at will. Those who wanted his knowledge had to hold him fast through every transformation — and he did not make it easy.

Wrestling with Heracles

During his quest for the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, Heracles needed to learn where the garden lay at the edge of the world. He found Nereus sleeping on the shore and seized him before the old god could slip into the waves. Nereus shifted through fire, water, serpent, and a dozen other forms — trying to burn, drown, or bite free of the grip — but Heracles held through every transformation until the old sea god, exhausted, took his true shape again and told him the way.

The Warning to Paris

When Paris sailed from Troy toward Sparta to claim Helen, Nereus calmed the winds and halted the ship. He delivered a prophecy the prince did not want to hear: warriors combing their hair for war and a thousand ships crossing the Aegean — and at the end of it all, Hector dragged behind a chariot through the dust and the walls of Troy in flames. Nereus laid the whole disaster before him, from the first sail to the last flame. Paris heard every word and sailed on.
