About Bhudevi

Family
  • Varaha(spouse),Narakasura(child)Consort

Narakasura, the fearsome asura lord of Pragjyotishpura, was born from the union of Varaha and Bhudevi — a demon son of the divine boar and the earth, whose tyranny would later require Krishna to intervene at his own mother Bhudevi's plea.

Some Puranic traditions attribute Narakasura's parentage to Vishnu and Bhudevi broadly rather than specifically to the Varaha avatara. The Bhagavata Purana (10.59) names Bhudevi as mother without specifying the father's form.

  • Vishnu(spouse),Narakasura(child)Consort

Bhudevi is Vishnu's second consort, rescued in his Varaha avatar by lifting her from the cosmic ocean. Their son Narakasura grew to become a tyrannical demon king before Krishna ended his reign.

  • Sita(child)Miraculous

Sita emerged from the earth, born of the goddess Bhudevi. At the end of her life, Sita called upon her mother and the earth opened to receive her back.

Aspect of
  • Bhudevi, the earth goddess, manifests as Lakshmi's compassionate aspect in Sri Vaishnava theology, flanking Vishnu opposite Shridevi as his earthly consort who shelters all beings upon her body.

  • The Vedic earth goddess Prithvi, celebrated in the Prithvi Sukta as the broad and bountiful ground beneath all beings, evolved into the Puranic Bhudevi who became Vishnu's earthly consort and the mother of Narakasura and Sita.
