Mythology & Lore

The Gates of Vaikuntha

Jaya and his brother Vijaya served as the eternal gatekeepers of Vaikuntha, the celestial abode of Vishnu. According to the Bhagavata Purana (3.15-16), the Four Kumaras, ancient mind-born sons of Brahma who appeared as young children despite their vast age, arrived at the gates seeking audience with Vishnu. Jaya and Vijaya, failing to recognize the sages' true nature, refused them entry. The Kumaras, who had never before been denied anything, cursed both gatekeepers to fall from Vaikuntha and take birth in the mortal world.

When Vishnu himself appeared, he acknowledged the curse as just but offered his devoted servants a choice: seven births as virtuous devotees, or three births as powerful demons who would be slain by Vishnu's own avatars and thereby return to his side more swiftly. Jaya and Vijaya, unable to bear prolonged separation from their lord, chose three births of enmity.

Three Births of Enmity

The Bhagavata Purana (7.1) traces the fulfillment of the curse through the cosmic ages. In the first birth, during the Satya Yuga, the two gatekeepers were born as the asura brothers Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyaksha dragged the earth into the cosmic ocean and was slain by Vishnu in his Varaha (boar) avatar. Hiranyakashipu, consumed by hatred for Vishnu after his brother's death, obtained a boon of near-invincibility from Brahma, only to be torn apart by Narasimha, Vishnu's man-lion form.

In the Treta Yuga, they were born as Ravana and Kumbhakarna, the rakshasa lords of Lanka. Rama, the seventh avatar, destroyed them both in the war to reclaim Sita. In their final birth during the Dvapara Yuga, they appeared as Shishupala and Dantavakra, kings who reviled Krishna until he ended their lives. With the third death, the curse was exhausted, and the gatekeepers returned at last to their stations before Vishnu's gates.
