Mythology & Lore

The Gates of Vaikuntha

Vijaya and his brother Jaya stand eternally at the gates of Vaikuntha, Vishnu's celestial abode. Their role is to regulate passage to the supreme lord, and in this capacity they are among the few beings who dwell permanently in Vishnu's presence. The Bhagavata Purana introduces them at the moment their duty fails. The Four Kumaras, the mind-born sons of Brahma who appear as naked children despite being among the eldest beings in creation, arrived at Vaikuntha seeking an audience with Vishnu. They passed through six gates without obstruction, but at the seventh, Jaya and Vijaya barred their path. The gatekeepers did not recognize the Kumaras and dismissed them as unworthy of entry.

The Kumaras, ancient sages accustomed to moving freely through all realms, were seized by anger for the first time in their existence. They pronounced a curse: Jaya and Vijaya would fall from Vaikuntha and be born in the mortal world. When Vishnu himself emerged and learned what had happened, he did not overturn the curse but offered his gatekeepers a choice. They could be born seven times as his devotees, living ordinary lives of worship before returning, or three times as his enemies, meeting him in combat and dying at his hands. Jaya and Vijaya chose enmity, preferring three violent lives to seven long ones, so fierce was their longing to return to his service.

Three Lives as Demons

The first birth brought them into the world as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, the great asura brothers. Hiranyaksha dragged the earth into the cosmic ocean and was slain by Vishnu's boar avatar Varaha. Hiranyakashipu gained a boon of near-invincibility and terrorized the three worlds until Vishnu appeared as Narasimha, the man-lion, and tore him apart at twilight on a threshold, fulfilling every condition of the boon while destroying him.

In their second birth, the gatekeepers became Ravana and Kumbhakarna, the rakshasa brothers of Lanka. Ravana abducted Sita and brought about the war that ended with Rama's arrows. Kumbhakarna, cursed to sleep for ages, woke only to fight and fall in battle against Rama's forces.

The third and final birth produced Shishupala and Dantavakra, kings who harbored deep hatred for Krishna. Shishupala hurled a hundred insults at Krishna during Yudhishthira's Rajasuya sacrifice before Krishna's Sudarshana Chakra severed his head. Dantavakra charged Krishna with a mace and was struck down. With each death, a luminous form rose from the fallen body and merged into Vishnu, and after the third pair of deaths, Jaya and Vijaya returned to their posts at the gates of Vaikuntha, their curse fulfilled.
