Mayavi was the son of the buffalo-demon Dundubhi, and sought to avenge his father's death at Vali's hands by challenging the vanara king at the gates of Kishkindha.
Vali pursued Mayavi into a deep cave after the demon challenged him at midnight, and slew him in the darkness below — but the long battle and blood seeping from the cave convinced Sugriva that Vali had perished, setting the brothers' tragic rift in motion.
