Kunti and Pandu are the parents of Yudhishthira, Bhima, and Arjuna. Though Pandu could not father children due to a curse, Kunti invoked the gods through a divine mantra.
Pandu wed Madri, princess of Madra, as his second wife. When Kunti shared her divine mantra, Madri invoked the twin Ashvins and bore the twins Nakula and Sahadeva, the youngest of the five Pandavas.
Vyasa fathered Pandu through niyoga with Ambalika, the younger widow of Vichitravirya, but Ambalika turned pale with fright at the sage's appearance, and so her son was born with a pallid complexion.
Pandu loosed an arrow at a pair of mating deer in the forest, not knowing they were the sage Kindama and his wife transformed. The mortally wounded Kindama revealed his true form and cursed Pandu to die the instant he embraced a woman with desire.
