Rishabhadeva fathered a hundred sons, the eldest and greatest being Bharata Chakravartin, who ruled the earth so justly that the subcontinent bore his name — Bharatavarsha, the land of Bharata.
King Nabhi and his wife Merudevi performed great sacrifices seeking a worthy heir, and Vishnu himself agreed to incarnate as their son Rishabhadeva, the sovereign who would teach humanity the foundations of civilization.
Vishnu descended as Rishabhadeva to establish the path of renunciation and teach humanity agriculture, writing, mathematics, and statecraft before withdrawing into naked asceticism and absolute indifference to the material world.
