Mythology & Lore

The Heavenly Descent

When Amaterasu dispatched her grandson Ninigi to descend from Takamagahara and rule the Central Land of Reed Plains, a formidable figure stood blocking the intersection of the heavenly and earthly paths. The Kojiki describes him as towering in stature, with a face that shone red like a mirror and a nose extending an extraordinary length. His eyes blazed with light.

The goddess Ame-no-Uzume was sent forward to confront this stranger. Sarutahiko declared that he had come not to obstruct but to serve as guide, leading Ninigi's procession safely to its destination on earth. Where other earthly kami resisted heavenly sovereignty and had to be subdued by Takemikazuchi, Sarutahiko chose to walk ahead and light the way. His encounter with Ame-no-Uzume led to their marriage, uniting an earthly god with a heavenly goddess.

The Drowning at Azaka

After guiding the heavenly descent, Sarutahiko returned to his home territory of Ise. The Nihon Shoki records his death: while fishing in the sea at Azaka, his hand was caught by a giant shellfish and he was pulled beneath the water. As he sank, three kami emerged from the stages of his drowning, deities of the bottom, middle, and surface of the sea. A god who had stood at the crossroads of heaven and earth, who had guided a divine procession down from the sky, drowned with his hand in a shell.
