Mythology & Lore

The Flower Contest

Daebyeolwang and his twin brother Sobyeolwang are the sons of Cheonjiwang, the Heavenly King, in the Cheonjiwang Bonpuri, a creation myth of Jeju Island's shamanic tradition. When Cheonjiwang decreed that his sons would compete for cosmic rulership through a flower-growing contest, Daebyeolwang tended his seed with sincerity and care. His bloom was magnificent. But while he slept, Sobyeolwang swapped the flowers, claiming the thriving bloom as his own and leaving the wilted one.

Daebyeolwang recognized the deception but accepted the outcome without protest. He took up governance of the jeoseung, the realm of the dead.

Lord of the Afterlife

Under Daebyeolwang's rule, the afterlife became a place of perfect order. Yeomra and the Ten Kings of the Underworld preside over their courts, and the Jeoseung Saja collect the dead and bring them for judgment.

Sobyeolwang's human world, meanwhile, fell into disorder. A ruler who cheated his way to power built a world where cheating flourished. In Jeoseung, every deed meets its consequence.
