Mythology & Lore
The Flower Contest
In the Cheonjiwang Bonpuri of Jeju shamanic tradition, the Heavenly King Cheonjiwang had twin sons. Daebyeolwang was just and sincere. Sobyeolwang was cunning and restless.
Cheonjiwang decreed that his sons would compete by growing flowers. The brother whose bloom was most beautiful would choose his cosmic domain. Daebyeolwang tended his seed with patience, producing a magnificent flower. Sobyeolwang's bloom wilted and failed.
Rather than accept defeat, Sobyeolwang waited until his brother fell asleep and swapped their flowers. He presented Daebyeolwang's thriving bloom as his own and left the wilted one beside his sleeping brother. When Cheonjiwang judged the contest, Sobyeolwang appeared the winner. Daebyeolwang recognized the deception but accepted the outcome without protest.
The Trickster's Realm
As the apparent victor, Sobyeolwang claimed the iseung, the human world. Daebyeolwang was assigned the jeoseung, the realm of the dead. The consequences shaped both realms permanently.
Daebyeolwang, just and incorruptible, established perfect order in the afterlife: souls properly judged, cosmic law enforced. Sobyeolwang's human world reflected the character of the ruler who cheated his way to power. Evil and disease entered mortal existence. Malicious spirits roamed freely among the living. The world he won by deception became a world where deception thrived.
