Mythology & Lore
The Self-Requested Daughter
Jacheongbi was born to Kim Jinguk and Jo Jinguk, a couple childless for over thirty years who finally received a daughter after prayers at a Buddhist temple. Named Jacheongbi, the "self-requested child," she grew into a woman of fierce independence who refused every suitor her parents brought to the door.
Mun Doryeong and Jeong Sunam
At a washing stream, Jacheongbi met Mun Doryeong, a divine youth descended from Cheonsang to study among mortals. She disguised herself as a boy to study alongside him, and when he was called back to heaven, she revealed her true identity at the same stream where they had first met. While waiting for his return, her servant Jeong Sunam attempted to assault her. She killed him with a stone to the back of the head.
Disguising herself as a man once more, Jacheongbi traveled to Seocheon Kkotbat, the supernatural flower garden. Along the way she fed starving creatures and freed those caught in traps, winning safe passage. At the garden she earned the hwansaengkkot, flowers of resurrection. She used them to revive Jeong Sunam, then followed Mun Doryeong into heaven itself.
Death, Resurrection, and the Grain
In the celestial realm, a rebellion among the heavenly scholars erupted and Mun Doryeong was killed in the violence. Jacheongbi returned to Seocheon Kkotbat a second time, obtaining both more hwansaengkkot and the suremyeolmangaksimkkot, flowers of destruction. She resurrected Mun Doryeong and annihilated the rebel forces. From the heavenly storehouse she took the seeds of grain and brought them to earth.
The Segyeong Bonpuri ends with the three of them taking their divine stations. Mun Doryeong became Sangsegyeong, governing the celestial forces that nourish crops. Jacheongbi became Jungsegyeong, goddess of earthly farming who taught humanity to plow and plant. Jeong Sunam, the servant she had killed and revived, became Hasegyeong, god of cattle and livestock.
