Mythology & Lore

Descent and Meeting

Mun Doryeong descends from Cheonsang to the mortal world to pursue his studies. At a washing stream he meets a young man eager to study alongside him. It is Jacheongbi, who has disguised herself as a boy to gain an education denied to women. The two share quarters and study together, growing close over months of companionship. When Mun Doryeong is called back to the celestial realm, Jacheongbi walks with him on the road. At the very stream where they first met, she reveals herself as a woman and declares her love. The bond between them is fierce and immediate, but Mun Doryeong must return to heaven, and Jacheongbi is left behind on earth.

Separation and Reunion

While Mun Doryeong is gone, Jacheongbi faces dangers of her own. Her servant Jeong Sunam attempts to assault her, and she kills him with a stone to the back of the head. Disguising herself as a man once more, she travels to Seocheon Kkotbat, the supernatural flower garden, where she tends its flowers and animals to win the trust of the guardian. She earns the hwansaengkkot, flowers of resurrection, and uses them to revive Jeong Sunam. Then she sets out to follow Mun Doryeong into heaven itself.

Death and Apotheosis

In the celestial realm, a rebellion among the heavenly scholars erupts and Mun Doryeong is killed in the violence. Jacheongbi returns to Seocheon Kkotbat a second time. She obtains more hwansaengkkot along with the suremyeolmangaksimkkot, flowers of destruction, and uses them to resurrect Mun Doryeong and annihilate the rebel forces. The crisis ended, and each figure took a divine station. Mun Doryeong became Sangsegyeong, the upper god of agriculture who governs the celestial forces that nourish crops. Jacheongbi took Jungsegyeong, goddess of earthly farming, and the revived Jeong Sunam became Hasegyeong, god of cattle.
