Description

When Ningirsu appeared in his dreams commanding a new temple, Gudea gathered cedar from Lebanon and diorite from Magan, then raised the Eninnu at Lagash: a cosmic house built from divine blueprints revealed in vision.

Mythology & Lore

The Dream

Gudea, ruler of Lagash around 2144–2124 BCE, received a dream he could not interpret. A giant figure wearing a divine crown, with wings like a storm bird and a lion at each side, commanded him to build a temple. The vision was dense with symbols: a rising sun, a woman studying a tablet of stars, a warrior tracing lines on a tablet of lapis lazuli.

Gudea traveled to the goddess Nanshe at her temple in Nina. She decoded each element. The giant was Ningirsu, patron god of Lagash. The warrior with the tablet was Nindub, laying out the temple's plan. The rising sun was the god Ningishzida, who would stand at Gudea's side throughout the work. Gudea returned to Lagash knowing what heaven demanded.

The Eninnu

The Gudea Cylinders, the longest surviving Sumerian literary texts, describe every stage of what followed. Gudea purified the city. He consulted omens. He sent for cedar from Lebanon and diorite from Magan. Workers were ritually cleansed before they could touch the materials. Each phase of construction was accompanied by ceremony.

The temple, the Eninnu ("House of Fifty"), rose as a cosmic structure connecting earth to heaven, built from the divine blueprints Nanshe had revealed. When the work was done, elaborate dedication rituals installed Ningirsu in his new home. A great feast followed. Gudea then placed diorite statues of himself within the temple, hands clasped in prayer, wearing his distinctive woolen cap. They would continue worshipping Ningirsu on his behalf long after he was gone.
